New Feathered Neighbors

Mr. and Mrs. Bird have moved in...literally at our front door. Two Mourning Doves diligently built their nest inside our front door topiary! To top it off, now we have two eggs that they are taking turns sitting on. This has been an exciting development for us. We looked in our Florida Bird Book, and found out that they lay 2 white eggs, which will hatch in 14 days! Mr. Bird stays with the eggs during the day, and Mrs. Bird takes the night shift. (I know all too well that the night shift can be brutal, so I feel for her!) This reminds me of one of my favorite children's books, The Best Nest. It's a sweet story about two birds that are "sick" of their old nest and go searching for something "better". In the end, they end up right back in their old nest, because a "mother bird can change her mind"...it ends with a little baby bird popping out of an egg! I read this book to Drew, and can still remember my mom singing Mr. Bird's song..."I love my house, I love my nest, in all the world, our nest is best!" We are excited to watch the progress of our birds...and are looking forward to the two new baby doves soon...will keep you posted...

That is SO COOL. It makes me feel a little bad about thinking violent thoughts about the birds that chirp outside my window at 3am. I did Google it a few weeks back and discover that they chirp because of mating season, so your little development makes sense! We have nests in both of our oak trees but they are way way high so we can't see in them. : (

What a sweet story and how wonderful that you remember that book and your mom reading it to you. I can't wait to find it on Amazon. Please post pictures of the babies when they hatch:)

Very fun. We always had a nest right outside our door in Sewickley and well, you read my post about our obsessive robin a few weeks back. They always make for great conversation for the family.
Love the new look on your blog.
